Civil Rights Leaders Rally to Save Endangered Watts School School Major Force in Reducing Gang Violence

Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson and other civil rights leaders on Friday, August 17 will call on local officials and business leaders to contribute to an emergency fund to save the Los Angeles Community High School. The school has been a major force in reducing crime and gang violence in South L.A. and the Jordan Downs Projects by giving at risk students a second chance at education. The school will close without an emergency infusion of private funding. The Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable will announce at the press conference that it is awarding the school an Impact Micro Award grant to jumpstart the emergency funding effort. Hutchinson will urge others to match his organization’s grant. “The fight for quality education is the civil rights issue of this day,” says Hutchinson,” And the education of at risk youth is at the center of that fight. The Los Angeles Community High School has a proven track record of success and the community must insure that that that success continues. It takes money and support to make that happen. We’ll make that strong appeal to save the school.” Earl Ofari Hutchinson, President Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable Dwayne Wyatt, L.A Black Employees for Fairness Debbie Washington National Council of Negro Women Robert Taylor, Black Ministerial Alliance Lita Herron, President Youth Advocacy Coalition Reverend KW Tuloss National Action Network (Al Sharpton) West Coast Representative Pedro Baez, Founder Voice of the People Skip Townsend, Cease Fire Vicky Lindsay Project Cry No More
