Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Discusses Use of Deadly Force Policies with Pasadena Police Chief in Slaying of Former Football Player

Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable Will Monitor the McDade Shooting Investigation

Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson on Friday, March 30 had a lengthy meeting with Pasadena Police Chief Phillip Sanchez and the PPD command staff. The major issue of concern was the department’s policies, procedures and officer discipline on the use of deadly of force. The meeting was prompted by community concern over the shooting death of former Azusa High School football player Kendrec McDade by two Pasadena police officers. Chief Sanchez provided the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable with the department’s complete policy and training procedures on the use of deadly force. Hutchinson made recommendations about changes to prevent future deadly encounters such as the McDade killing.

“The purpose of the meeting was to review the Pasadena Police Department’s policies on when and in what situations an officer may use deadly force,” says Hutchinson,” And to see if those policies were violated in McDade’s killing. We will continue to monitor the circumstances of the shooting to insure a full and complete investigation.”
