The Senselessness of it All-Pedro Baez

Today’s tragedy didn’t make any sense at all. What do 20 innocent children in Newtown, CT have to with a deranged individual is beyond me. This could have happened to my children back in the 80’s and 90’s when they were in school. It could…

Not Again-Pedro Baez

Not Again

Pedro Baez

This morning I received word that a music teacher at Cherry Knoll Elementary School in Traverse City decided to change the word "gay" to "bright" in "Deck the Halls" for the children's Christmas concert.

What kind of bu-s—t is that?

This is similar to an attempt last year to remove references to the N word in future editions of the Mark Twain classic “Huckleberry Finn.”

Long before the word gay was…

It's Time to bring back the BLUE - Pedro Baez

As a baby boomer, I can recall when my mom and dad would go to the stores early on Saturday because at 6:00 PM they would close until Monday morning.

No super markets, no department stores, zilch. Except for a candy store, or a mom & pop grocery store, that was it.

Sunday was a family day.

A day to enjoy.

All of this was possible due to a thing called the “Blue Laws.”

What were the “Blue Laws?”

In Henry Taber's Faith or Fact, he…

Not So Far Fetched as Before -Pedro Baez

Not So Far Fetched as Before -Pedro Baez

A community advocate and friend, Morris Griffin AKA Big Money Griff has been campaigning for manufacturing jobs to leave China, Bangladesh, and any other foreign port that they may have gone for quite a while.

Many have said it will never happen.

Funny thing, it may happen now.

Today’s global report listed China as the nation where deficit, after deficit is occurring faster than its bullet train, that alone is bleeding it…

It had to Be-Pedro Baez

It had to Be

Pedro Baez

When word came that Joe Paterno knew of the sodomizing and lewd behavior by defensive coach Jerry Sandusky and reported it to university higher ups, technically he followed university procedure.

However rather than to cover it up, he should have accompanied Mike McQueary to police headquarters and reported the incident. He then should have called a press conference to announce to the world of what happened and if he did this he would be a hero, not…

This is too Much-Pedro Baez

This is too Much

Pedro Baez

Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would ever see this:

Two stories involving sexual harassment and child molestation involving two well known figures in the public eye in the same week yet.

First let’s start with Herman Cain. Now that Sharon Bialek has come forward this is not something that can swept under the rug. This is very serious. And before you say that famed LA based attorney Gloria Allred is seeking publicity, that…

Europe is just around the Corner-Pedro Baez

Europe is just around the Corner

Pedro Baez

In recent weeks I am amazed at the yawns and shrugs I get when Europe is mentioned. Remarks like “So what,” “Who cares,” and “We have our own problems,” show total apathy on the part of many in the US when the European debt crisis is mentioned.

What many have failed to realize is that what happens there happens here too.

Let me explain.

The European debt crisis is tied to many US financial concerns.… Continue

Sunday Night will never be the Same-Andy Rooney, An Appreciation

Pedro Baez

For many of us, the week ended with “60 Minutes.” We would view expose’s and we would then get to "A Few Minutes With Andy Rooney."

Andy was a friend, a pal. He would talk about things that we would discuss with friends, the sock draw, changes in magazine formats, what our relatives do, etc. You name it, Andy talked about it.

Now on Saturday morning November 5, 2011 we wake up to… Continue

Baseball 2011-Pedro Baez

Baseball 2011

Pedro Baez

The just concluded 2011 Major League Baseball season ended with a bang. The old worn out theory of if the New York Yankees aren’t in the Series it isn’t a Series went out the window.

The Texas Rangers (nee Washington Senators) battled the St. Louis Cardinals in what turns out to be seven memorable games. Game 6 which started off as a game of errors, turned into the best cliffhanger of all time. By the time all was said and done, the Cardinals… Continue

The Soul of New York-Piri Thomas, An Appreciation

The Soul of New York-Piri Thomas, An Appreciation

Pedro Baez

Piri Thomas perhaps more than anything symbolized what New York means to me. New York is the original melting pot. Where else in the 1950’s could you find a hodge podge of cultures, colors, ethnicities hanging out, playing stickball, singing doo wops on the corner, playing bongos in the park, dating girls who may not look like you?

That was the New York Piri wrote about. That’s the New York that I grew up… Continue

Time to Stop being Mr. Nice Guy-Pedro Baez

Time to Stop being Mr. Nice Guy

Pedro Baez

In the movie “Kissinger and Nixon,” George Takei who plays Le Duc Tho, says about President Nixon that after the election he will “get tough.”

That is precisely what you need to do Mr. President. Take off the gloves and kick butt. The GOP seems to think they have you in such a way that he will submit to anything they say, like when an opponent giving up when wrestling icon Bruno Sammartino applied the “Italian Back…

America Must Share The Blame-Pedro Baez

America Must Share The Blame

Pedro Baez

America has always been seen as the last bastion of hope by the rest of the world when it has comes to justice. The belief is in America, if you are charged with a crime, you have the right to counsel, you will get a fair trial, be judged by a jury of your peers, and if you are innocent, you will be free.

So where is the justice for Troy Anthony Davis?

It seems ironic that this isn’t the case in this very sad… Continue
